068 - Storm of Shadows GenCon Releases Compilation

Just wanted to throw up all the GenCon preview pictures in one place, split by faction.

Guild

Only available as a free addition to every individual order over $100 made at GenCon or from the Wyrd webstore during GenCon (August 16th - 19th).
Likely to: Be the go-to first Death Marshall model hired in every Guild crew in the future.

Even rarer - good luck getting hold of this if you're not a Henchman! Only available to some Henchman who've done a specified amount of events to support the summer Dead Heat campaign.
Likely to: Cost the GDP of a small country to buy on eBay

Arcanists

A kindred spirit to Papa Loco and Pere Ravage, who definitely wins the prize for bringing the most explosives
Likely to: Survive very few games

The latest species Gamin, and an unexpected one - it's great that they're all individuals too. Now taking bets for Book5... Stone Gamin? Feather Gamin? Cheese Gamin?
Likely to: Combine into the Rail Golem at the first sign of trouble

One stonking great big Metal Gamin. Basically he's a walking train, and he seems deadly.
Likely to: Be able to look Nightmare Teddy eye to eye. Then headbutt him.

Until we find out what these guys can do, they seem a little generic. Hopefully Mei Feng has some unique tricks up her sleeve. The scenic base she comes with is incredible. Yay for plastic!
Likely to: Be everyone's second choice crew after Dark Debts

Neverborn

Dapper Master + Gigantic Totem + Gribbly Minions = Absolutely Sublime.
Likely to: Be the crew *every* opponent uses in *every* game you play for the next few months

Ever wondered what happens when a Mindless Zombie and a squid get it on?
Likely to: Leave a slimy mess trail.

A big bouncer type, so I'm expecting him to have some bodyguard type abilities. Looks nice and beefy.
Likely to: Have synergy with Mr Tannen

If I wrote his rules, the coin rolling on the back of his hand would mean I'd design some sort of ability involving 50/50 chance. Someone else wrote his rules though, so who knows.
Likely to: Have an ability involving 50/50 probability

Could these be the first models with (1) Lure that you could actually imagine yourself being lured by?
Likely to: Provoke a discussion on gender stereotyping on the Wyrd forums.

Outcasts

The second to last model to be released from Twisting Fates, and a very long anticipated release.
Likely to: Become Hoffman's new best buddy

Other

It's massive. It's very very cool. But will it get enough use for people to want to buy it at $80?
Likely to: Be used as two very expensive Alt Hanged models

064 - Malifaux Masters Inspiration - Neverborn

The background behind the Malifaux masters has been discussed briefly in the Wyrd forums in the past, but I thought it might be interesting to bring together some of that information, along with a bit of my own research.

First up - Neverborn!

Lilith
Lilith is actually a pretty easy character to find the inspiration for. She shares her name and a lot of her attributes with the Lilith of Jewish myth who dates right back to Assyria around 700BC (present day northern Iraq). The Assyrians had 2 types of demons named Lilit (female), Lilu (male) and this is believed to be where her name came from originally. It’s pretty obvious to see that these names were also used for the Neverborn twins in Rising Powers.

Babylonian Lilith Statue - no Greatsword here!
A Lilit was a she-demon or succubus with long hair and wings who seduced human men and savagely hunted and killed babies and children. Originally it referred to a type of demon rather than a specific individual.

This ancient legend was incorporated into Jewish folklore in medieval times, where the Lilit myth was merged with the story of Genesis from the Bible. According to this new myth, before God made Eve, he had made Lilith from the same dust that Adam had been created. The first couple argued a lot, as Adam wanted to rule over Lilith but she considered herself his equal. Pesky women, eh!

Lilith eventually left Adam and the Garden of Eden behind and fled to the Red Sea where she gave birth to numerous demon-children. Adam sent three angels to retrieve her, and when they found her they threatened to kill a hundred of her offspring a day if she didn't come back to the Garden with them. Lilith refused, but in return she promised that she would go out and weaken and kill small children and babies descended from Adam, in retribution for her mistreatment. God went on to create the more subservient Eve out of Adam’s rib (so she couldn’t claim her equality) and the rest is history.

In modern popular culture, Lilith is portrayed as the archetypal succubus demon, and examples of her can be seen in anime, film and music. The character also made a recent appearance as a main series villain in the TV show Supernatural.

A typical Succubus

Pandora

Most people know the story of Pandora’s box, but I hadn't realised that in the Pandora myth she was, just like Lilith, the first woman. This time coming from Greek mythology, Pandora was created by Hephaestus (God of technology, fire and craft) to be the first woman, as a punishment for men who had recently stolen fire from the Gods. The name Pandora means “all-gifted”, referring to the seductive gifts that the various Gods contributed to her completion. Athena gave her beauty, dressed her in a silvery gown and veil and gave her a gold crown, Apollo taught her to sing and play the lyre, Hermes gave her cunning and boldness, and other Gods taught her other skills with the objective of making her the perfect specimen.

Not all was well however, as in revenge for the theft of fire, Zeus made her foolish and mischievous, and Hera gave her curiosity. This was a recipe for disaster when she was presented with a jar, covered in fantastic images, and was told she should never open under any circumstances!

She became married to Epimetheus, who found her to be the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. In a world filled with only men, one has to wonder what they were getting up to before the first woman appeared on the scene. But then again, they were ancient Greeks, so maybe not. Pandora was tormented by the beautiful jar she wasn’t allowed to open and intrigued by what might be inside. She did her best to resist, but eventually her curiosity got the better of her and she opened it to look inside.

Just a little peek...

At that moment all the evils inside the box were released into the world. Sickness, insanity, disease, greed, crime, death, lies, depression and every other bad thing you can think of. This must have been quite a shock to the people who’d been living quite happily up to then, without all these things to mess up their lives!

Ooops!

It should be noted that the Pandora of the myth opened the box out of curiosity and was not evil. In contrast, Malifaux Pandora is a malicious bitch who has weaponised the negative emotions in her box and releases them deliberately.

Zoraida

Zoraida's inspiration doesn't appear to be a come from a single source. Instead it seems to be a stitching together of two main influences, Baba Yaga and New Orleans Voodoo.

Baba Yaga is a Slavic myth, and the likely origin of the "Old Crone Living in the Woods" archtype found throughout literature for hundreds of years. In the original myth, Baba Yaga flies through the air in a giant pestle and mortar, often kidnapping, and presumably eating children. Rather than there being one particular story in which she features, she seems to crop up in various folk tales from Eastern Eurpoe, usually crossing paths with one or more wayward children and filling the antagonist role. On rare occasions, however, she has been known to give advice and guidance to the main characters.

Pestle & Mortar doesn't seem the most practical transportation
In one particular Russian fairytale called "Vasilisa the Beautiful", Baba Yaga is served by three riders of White, Red and Black, each one representing Day, Sun and Night. That this is connected to the Malifaux Hooded Rider's ability to change phase from turn to turn seems likely.

In another Malifaux borrow from the myth, Baba Yaga's home is a hut that walks on gigantic chicken legs - something Wyrd have hinted at in their fluff with a brief mention of a hut that walks on mechanical legs being sighted in the Bayou.

Better than a caravan!

The Zoraida character takes the Baba Yaga myth and mixes in a healthy dose of Voodoo, in particular the dolls (although dolls also feature heavily in Slavic myth), the curses, the swamp setting and the tarot influences.

Voodoo (meaning a spirit/force that can intervene in human affairs) originated in Haiti, but a particular blend of voodoo grew to be practised in Louisiana by exiles following the Haitian revolution. It was largely practised by slaves, who merged Catholic beliefs with beliefs from their African heritage. Zoraida's Obey spell and her Voodoo Doll totem (her primary means of dealing damage), both stem from this religious origin. I was surprised to learn that in real-life voodoo, dolls are usually used to bless instead of curse - the intention is for them to act as a type of talisman to protect the target in particular ways.

The Dreamer

It doesn't appear that the Dreamer (and Lord Chompy Bits) was directly influenced by mythology - instead drawing together a few tropes in a completely original way. EricJ has explained that he came up with the original concept as a result of wanting a child Master who started the game facing down an entire enemy crew all on his own.

The evil child archtype, the "enfant terriblé", already features in Malifaux in the form of Candy and Kade, so the Dreamer was a natural extension, however where Pandora's child companions are effectively spirits/demons in child form, the Dreamer is an actual young boy. Evil children are inherently scary, so are found across film and television. I imagine the Dreamer himself to be basically a blonde version of Damien from The Omen, but he could equally be influenced by scary young characters in The Shining, Children of the Corn or that classic episode of the Twilight Zone where a young boy controls his entire family who live in constant terror of his reality bending power.

Damien was most unhappy with the lack of in-car DVD player

This boy could make you disappear if you displeased him

The theme of dreams becoming real, and being able to manifest creatures and objects through the power of dreams has been a part of fantasy fiction for generations, appearing in, for example The Wheel of Time, The Matrix and Nightmare on Elm Street. Usually these examples feature the dreamer moving through a separate dream world in which they take control of their surroundings, but can die in real life if overcome by the dream creatures they have to face. In contrast, Wyrd's Dreamer brings the Nightmares *out* of the dream world and into the "real" world to menace the Malifaux citizenry.

Lord Chompy Bits is effectively the Bogeyman. No, not the WWE wrestler - the monster used by parents to threaten children if they misbehave! Traditionally he lives in the closet or under the bed, and versions of the Bogeyman myth are found across the entire world. In most of them he kidnaps and/or eats children who displease their parents. It would seem that children are a key food group as part of a balanced nutritious diet for the average Neverborn master!

Are you afraid of the dark?

033 - Ding, Dong, the Alp Bomb's Dead

This week, the Alp Bomb was brutally killed off as a viable tactic. Wyrd posted six changes to the Alp's abilities onto the forums in a long-awaited post here.

You can follow the link for the full details of the changes, but in summary Wyrd have changed the way that Alps work in two separate ways:

Firstly, Alp abilities that cause enemy models to suffer Wds by being in proximity when they activate, walk or strike are not as powerful as they were previously. Before, you would suffer 1 Wd for each Alp in range. Now, you only suffer 1 Wd regardless of the number of Alps up in your grill. A bunch of Alps dropped on your crew will still have a good chance of inflicting Slow and a Wd or two, but aren't going to be killing potentially any non-Soulstone user they surround. "Extremely deadly" has been downgraded to "Extremely annoying".

Secondly, Alps have been made Insignificant. This is a err... significant change because they'll no longer be useful in achieving some Strategies or Schemes.

The first change I expected, as it's been a sore topic on the Wyrd boards since before I discovered the game. Everyone knew it definitely needed changing, with hordes of players begging Wyrd to swing the nerf bat. Despite all the pitchfork waving, Wyrd have obviously taken their time playtesting to understand any unforeseen implications the change might have, before reacting accordingly. Thanks Wyrd!

The second change I didn't expect, but I can understand why it was made. At 3ss, Alps have been brought more in line with Sorrows, as a model that's nice for supporting the crew's main hitters, but isn't going to be game winning by itself. As other people have already pointed out, now that the Dreamer has access to Night Terrors, he doesn't need another cheap Significant minion to be able to compete at eg. Recconoiter.

Alps will still feature in many crews, but as annoyance/support, which it seems is how they were originally envisaged. Best of all, Neverborn players will no longer face abuse from their opponents for bringing Alps - so we can all rejoice!

024 - Nightmare Teddy: Now with 50% less cuddly!

No Avatar news this week I'm afraid. Instead Wyrd have leaked pictures of two of the Limited Edition figures that will be up for grabs at Gencon.

I've been really looking forward to seeing the new Teddy since it was revealed that he would be one of the Nightmare models this year, and the big reveal doesn't disappoint!

Some musings:

1. Wow!
2. That is one seriously tall model!
3. He seems more... real looking than the regular Teddy model, which some might say is a negative point for a model that's meant to be a dream/nightmare. For me though I think it's an improvement over the slightly cartoonish original. That's not to say the original isn't great, just in a different way.
4. I think using both normal and nightmare Teddies together would look strange. They're completely different styles of sculpts.
5. This will probably mean I retire my current Teddy and grab two nightmares (maybe...)
6. This plan is made all the more apt by there being two different heads and an alternative (currently unseen) arm.
7. My wallet has already started crying.
8. Why hasn't the alt arm been shown yet? I suspect he'll be carrying something amazingly cool and Wyrd are holding it back as a surprise. Giant carving knife to match Kade's, maybe? Or even a nightmare Kade himself, being carried along by his giant cuddly pal?
9. He's much leaner than expected, but I'm happy with that. He looks like a scraggy old teddy bear that's been mistreated, with half his stuffing mostly fallen out.
10. Not sure if he will suit a panda colour scheme any more - I fear if I try that he may come out looking like a skunk!

Also pictured alongside Teddy is Miss Deneanor, the new alt Convict Gunslinger, who will be taking the place of Miss Pack for 2011/2012. It's not yet known if she'll be packed as a random rare drop in X% of crew boxes, or if Wyrd have different plans for making her available after Gencon.

I'm undecided on this model. She looks pretty cool in a Tomb Raider sort of way, but she's too modern looking for me - I'd have preferred something a little more Steampunk. Looking at her alongside the recent female Desperate Merc, I'm a little worried at the direction Wyrd are taking with female miniatures recently. They just seem to be of a style completely alien to Malifaux, so fingers crossed it's not the start of a real trend - I have high expectations for alt-Pandora and don't want her spoiling!

012 - Mister Oogie Boogie

Just a quick update on the most recent addition to my Neverborn crew, the Stitched-Together. He was another quite simple model to paint, being that he's 90% brown. At first I had some trouble with the main colour in that after highlighting, it just looked like brown skin.

However, I found that by going all over the model with thin dark brown lines, it gives the impression of a hessian sack, at least from the other side of the table.

I was especially proud of this guy's performance in a recent game (see my last post). It seems that by activating him towards the end of my turn, I can use his gambling abilities to replenish my Control Hand. Assuming my opponent is also running low on cards by that point, I may be able to cheat on Gamble Your Life which has a severe damage of seven! I haven't yet had opportunity to use his Line of Sight blocking skills, but it's another talent up his sleeve for next time. Another of these is on the painting table, with the aim of getting Lord Chompy Bits up and running in the next month or so. Watch this space!

008 - If You Go Down in the Woods Today...

"If you go down in the woods today,
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down in the woods today,
You'd better go in disguise.

Today's the day that Teddy will bite your face off"

The latest addition to my Neverborn crew, Teddy was a lot of fun to paint. There isn't a lot of detail on the model, and I kept it very simple. He's painted as a panda to match the teddy carried by his best buddy Baby Kade.

I didn't like the "care-bear" heart shaped spot on his chest, so that was filled in with Green Stuff and sculpted to blend into his fur.

Another lovely model, I have a feeling this guy is going to be a permanent feature on Pandora's team!

003 - Meet the Neverborn

There I was, happily painting my way through legions of Imperial Guardsmen and Leman Russ tanks, eagerly looking forward to having the army finished by the new year and ready to join the local gaming club, the Leeds Night Owls to learn how to play 40k, when I was bitten by the Neverborn bug!

While browsing their forums I came across mention of the game of Malifaux, and a quick Google search led me to this picture of the creepy little serial killing baby known as "Baby Kade". My curiosity immediately piqued, I delved further, and after discovering he partners with a giant carnivorous Teddy Bear(!!), I knew I had to try this game and that my starting faction couldn't be anything else but the Neverborn. I immediately picked up a Legion of Sorrows box set which would allow me to start playing straight away.

My Crew
Pandora
Owner of the legendary Box, Pandora is one of the 4 currently available Neverborn Masters, and plays completely differently to any other master in the game. By opening the Box, Pandora unleashes the worst fears and emotions of her enemies, who literally kill themselves with self-loathing and pity. She can also be incredibly fast, appearing and disappearing before the enemy crew has time to react, and her style is very much "death by a thousand cuts", preferring to chip away at the health of enemy models 1 Wd at a time, rather than wade in and hit things hard with a big sword (that's Lilith's job!)

I painted Pandora in a similar scheme to the example in the Malifaux book. I had experimented with a few different colours for her dress, including red and white, but nothing seemed to look right, so I settled on the cream colour.
The magical flame emerging from the open box is actually half the size of the one the model comes supplied with. I felt that putting the whole piece on obscured the rest of the model, so I snipped off the bottom half and only used the tip of the fire. The fire was painted GW Jade Green, a colour which I carried through to the whole crew in small amounts, to give a unified scheme.

Coat: Liche Purple/Liche Purple+Skull White
Dress/Leg Wraps: Graveyard Earth/Bleached Bone
Skin: Dark Flesh/Dwarf Flesh/Elf Flesh
Hair: Chaos Black/Skull White streaks

Pandora's base was made by cutting out sections of cardboard from a cereal packet in the shapes of flagstones, and glueing them on with PVA. This was then drybrushed to resemble stone, and a few tufts of static grass added to finish the effect.

Candy
Candy is the Woe of Innocence Corrupted, and she features in the top right corner of this blog in Voodoo-doll form. Candy hates humans, and those she cannot ensnare with poisoned sweets often fall foul of her ability to use her victims guilt and regret against them.
I decided to paint my Neverborn children with regular skin tones, instead of the pallid, undead looking skin in the Malifaux book, as I didn't want them to look like zombies, especially when I might consider painting zombies in a Ressurectionist crew in the future. Plus I figure that if they look like real children then it's even more scary!

Pink Dress: Blood Red+Skull White, highlighted with extra Skull White
White Frills: Fortress Grey/Skull White
Hair: Bestial Brown/Sunburst Yellow
Skin: Dark Flesh/Dwarf Flesh/Elf Flesh

Candy's lollipop was painted with a Jade Green spiral pattern, she was based with the same cardboard flagstones as Pandora.

Baby Kade
Kade is the Woe of Innocence Lost, and he delights in pretending to be a baby to lure his victims to their death, which he dispenses with a gigantic (to him at least!) carving knife. While not the strongest melee fighter available to Pandora, if he gets the right triggers at the right time, he can be deadly. Plus, isn't he just so CUTE? The model is one of the tiniest things I've painted, but I still wanted to pull off a nice paint job, so he took a lot of time to get right.

I painted his teddy bear in the colours of a panda, as I intend to add Teddy to the crew soon, and he will also be painted as a great big evil (but cuddly) panda.

Skin: Dark Flesh/Dwarf Flesh/Elf Flesh
Nappy: Fortress Grey/Skull White

I did my best to make his eyes look as deranged as possible, by painting small pupils in the centre of his big round eyes.

Sorrows
These guys are minor Woes, basically backup for Pandora and friends, and they don't have any particularly special abilities in themselves. Their main use is in linking up to the main crew members in order to borrow their more effective spells, and absorb damage from enemies attacks. I painted them slightly different to the pictures on the box, because I didn't like the bright green colour that made them look like Slimer from the Ghostbusters.

Shadows Layer: Dark Angels Green
Base/Middle Layer: Jade Green
Highlight Layer: Rotting Flesh

The protruding tongues and eyes were painted with Scab Red followed by Blood Red highlights. Lastly, the bases were finished off with cardboard flagstones and static grass

The next addition to the crew is going to be Teddy, following which I'm leaning towards a couple of Stitched Together, who appear to work well with Pandora's Willpower based mechanics.
